It's very true that health insurance does not cover everything. If it did, no one could afford the premiums to even get it. The numbers you quoted about the huge percentage of medical bankruptcies for people who do have health insurance are scary to say the least. I would like to know how many of those people had DISABILITY insurance.

People forget about that. They think they have enough money to squeeze out a few medical bills for the portion their health insurance does not pay or they think about how they'll make payments. What they forget is that if you are sick you can't work and income stops.

It's important for people to have adequate disability insurance so they have money to pay the rent, mortgage, car payment, electric and gas bill, and for groceries, all of which, of course, health insurance does not cover. The unfortunate people I know who had to file medical bankruptcy in spite of having health insurance, did not have disability insurance or any savings to draw on to pay the basic necessities while they were unable to work.

To have true health care reform, this problem needs to be addressed as well.
